Global Recycling Day: Can Socks be Recycled?

At Peper Harow, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. We are always thinking of new ways to improve our environmental impact, reducing it as much as we can. Here are some of the ways we practice sustainability, with a specific focus on recycling.

Solar Power

A portion of our facilities are powered using solar panels. This is great for the environment as it’s a renewable resource and doesn’t produce any pollution or greenhouse gases.

Packaging

There is so much waste produced from packaging, so we decided to make a few simple and easy changes which lead to drastic difference. All plastic used in our packaging is recycled and biodegradable, meaning it won’t sit in landfills for years to come. As well as the riders we use on our socks being made from recycled cardboard.

No fast fashion

One of the biggest pollutants is the quick turnover of clothing due to poor quality. We believe in investing in high-quality garments which will last longer, minimising the amount of clothing wastage. Our socks are made from the highest quality cotton, ensuring they’ll last longer and you won’t be needing to buy replacements anytime soon, fighting fast fashion.

Can socks be recycled?

The answer is yes! There are a few different ways you can recycle your socks. Firstly, you can donate them to organisations which recycle them for you. An example of this is Oxfam. They’ll take your garments, even if they’re not in the best condition, and recycle the cotton. You can also choose to drop them at clothing banks or local recycling and waste sites. These places will try do their best to salvage bits worth recycling.

Alternatively, an at-home way to recycle your socks is to repurpose them! If you’re crafty, try get creative and cut them up – using the material on a new personal project!

We took recycling to the next level and created a range of socks made from recycled materials.

Our recycled socks

Our recycled cotton is made from pre-consumer cotton t-shirt offcuts created during the manufacturing process and post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. The yarn used in our sustainable products is made from 50% recycled cotton and 50% recycled polyester, all of which is 100% Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified.

Our recycled cotton blend reduces textile waste, saves water, and minimizes the carbon footprint of production, as it requires less energy and resources than producing new cotton or polyester. By using recycled cotton and polyester, we give a new life to post-consumer waste and reduce the amount of textile waste that ends up in landfills. Our recycled cotton blend is durable enough to be used in sport socks, but stylish enough to be used as a fashion accessory, providing versatility in sustainable fashion.

By using 100% GRS certified recycled cotton and polyester, we support the circular economy, where waste is reused and repurposed instead of discarded, promoting a more sustainable and responsible approach to consumption.

We are proud to be celebrating Global Recycling Day and are excited to continue thinking of new ways to implement sustainability in our business. You can shop our socks made from recycled plastic and cotton here.
