Five Beautiful Historic Walking Locations in the UK

In honour of national walking day on the 2nd of April, we are celebrating some of the most stunningly scenic walking spots right here on our doorstep in the United Kingdom. Of course, our sovereign state is home to countless historical sights, jaw-dropping coastlines and rolling fields and hills straight out of a storybook. We can’t, include them all in one article, as no matter where you are in the UK, you will always be able to find a beautiful countryside trail or cliffside footpath to wonder. However here are a few honourable mentions (in no particular order) of some of the most iconic walking spots in the UK.

Hadrian’s Wall

This ancient piece of our history in Northumberland dates back to 122AD. Walk along the bath pf Europe’s largest surviving roman monument. Spanning from coast to coast with Hadrian's Wall accompanying you much of the way from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway. Any section of this 73-mile-long feat of Roman engineering hosts a unique walking experience. Or if you are an experienced outdoorsman, why not challenge yourself for the 6-9 day long experience of walking the whole length of this historical path.

Avebury Ridgeway Walk

If Roman architecture is still a bit too modern for you, you may want to visit the largest prehistoric standing stone circle in the world at Averbury Stone Circle and Henge. Explore the local World Heritage trail featuring a Museum, Café and historical Avebury Manor at the end of this prehistoric walk.

South Downs Way

Lewes and Ditchling are home to some of Sussex's prettiest landscapes, both claiming charming Tudor mansions, cosy local pubs and cottage gardens backing onto the leafy rises of the Downs. The walk between them is one you just have to try if you are interesting in experiencing the UKs nature and wildlife.

West Highland Way

If you are up for a challenge, there is no better place you can go than this 96-mile hike across Scotland. However for the beginners, there are always the edited highlights, joining the path on the final dramatic landscape from Bridge of Orchy to Fort William.

Featuring the iconic Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Scotland, the United Kingdom and the British Isles. And of course, the highlight of any walk in the Scottish Highland is the cows, and this walk will almost always guarantee some amazing cows.

Anglesey Coast Path

Speaking of iconic wildlife, a list of walks around the UK would not be complete without mentioning Puffin Island (islet of Ynys Seiriol), or its local area of Anglesey, a largely flat island whose shores give a stunning view of the mainland. Explore the number of long-distance footpaths along the coastline. Travelling westward you may even spot dolphins below the cliffs of Red Wharf Bay, before honouring the age old tradition of a sunset pint in local pub Ship Inn.
