The Important Impact of Recycled Cotton

Global recycling day is celebrated every year on the 18th of March. First established in 2018 by the Global Recycling foundation, a non-profit organization that works to promote the importance of recycling and sustainable manufacturing. Every year on the 18th of march, organisations, companies and individuals come together to help raise awareness for the positive impact recycling has.

If you are interested in taking an active part in Global Recycling Day this year, then check around your local community and see if anyone is organising a community clean up or recycled craft fair! (and if you can’t find any, why not host your own?!)

Waste In the Fashion Industry

Global recycling day is the perfect opportunity to learn about all the new and exciting technologies that are progressing every day to make manufacturing across all areas more sustainable. It is exciting to learn how every industry pushes for a cleaner and more sustainable future in their own ways. In the fashion industry, this often takes the form of creating fabrics from recycled materials.

As we’re sure you already know, waste and pollution in the fashion industry is a huge problem

·         It takes 20,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram of cotton

·         The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global water waste

  • the processes in which colour and other chemicals are applied to fabrics is responsible for 3% of global CO2 emissions as well as over 20% of global water pollution. *
  • It can take more than 200 years for clothing to decompose in landfill sites
  • 60% of new clothing materials are plastic
  • Less than 1% of clothing waste is recycled into new clothes

*Water pollution causes a huge risk to sea life, toxic substances ingested by fish can cause deformities like gill damage, fin and tail rot, reproductive problems, and even death

Other Ways to Help Recycle

On top of buying clothes made from recycled fabrics, there are many small ways you can help make your day-to-day life more sustainable and eco-friendly, here are some examples.

  •        Repair and Reuse old clothes- Mend holes and rips in old clothes, and when they get too worn to wear, cut them up and use them as rags for cleaning around the house.
  •        Re-purpose Paper- paper and cardboard can be disposed of in your recycling bin, but you can also recycle it at home, keep a hold of old papers and use them as art supplies or note paper.
  •          Zero Waste Shopping- more and more shops allow you to bring in your own containers and buy all sorts of products, from oats and cuts to washing up liquid and laundry prouder. However, if you aren’t lucky enough to live near a store like this, you can opt for buying larger re-fill packets of everyday essentials and topping up your own reusable containers at home for easy storage (this often works out more cost-effective too!)
